True to tradition, this year’s Met Gala occurred on the first Monday of May. This time, the spring exhibit's theme was ‘Karl Lagerfeld: A line of beauty’ in honour of the legendary German designer. Apart from his eponymous brand, Lagerfeld helmed a number of fashion houses, from Patou Balmain, Fendi, and Chloe to, possibly the most famous, Chanel.
The red (or white, in this case) carpet was splattered with his signature black and white, with influences of old Hollywood. As expected, we saw crisp tailoring (Kristen Stewart’s androgynous look), signature tweed, combined with feminine bows and headbands and pearls (cue Emma Chamberlain and Alia Bhatt). Celebs like Jared Leto, Doja Cat and Lil Nas X paid homage to Lagerfeld’s beloved cat Choupette and his irreverent spirit with their feline-inspired looks.
As the world gears up to dissect and discuss yet another round of memorable fashion moments, a viral meme or two, we’re looking at the night’s most noteworthy beauty looks. Below, we break down our favourite looks from Met Gala ‘23 and show you just how to recreate them with Tira’s top makeup picks.
1. Anne Hathaway
Anne Hathway’s beauty look was a nod to classic ’60s glamour, with a dewy, porcelain complexion, thick jet-black liner, and pale, blush-pink lips. What stole the show, though, was her voluminous beehive-esque bouffant, with face-framing strands to finish the look.
Prep:
Hydration is key to recreating this look— start with a hydrating, illuminating primer to get that perfect dewy base. The M.A.C Studio Radiance Moisturizing + Illuminating Silky Primer will hold onto your makeup while giving it a subtle dewy finish.
Base:
Follow up with a sheer, pearlescent foundation or tint for added shine. Opt for an illuminating pick like the Smashbox Halo Healthy Glow All-In-One Tinted Moisturizer.
Eyes:
Line your eyes thickly with a jet-black liner on the top lash line and a thinner, more-subtle line on your lower lash line. The Clinique High Impact Easy Liquid Liner will get you the desired shape with lots of control.
Cheeks & lip:
Finish with a creamy blush on the apples of your cheek and a light pink gloss. Swipe the Shiseido Shimmer Gel Lip Gloss in Toki Nude to complete the look.
2. Emma Chamberlain
Emma Chamberlain’s look ticked off so many boxes— her bushy, neatly brushed brows and thickly lined eyes were reminiscent of Lagerfeld’s days at Chanel, and her pared-down nude lip was current yet completely on-theme.
Base:
Start with a matte, full-coverage foundation to create this look and contour generously— sculpt your cheekbones and your nose, and don’t forget the temples. Pair Too Faced Born This Way 24-Hour Longwear Matte Foundation with the Makeup Revolution Mega Bronzer for Emma’s Met-ready base.
Brows:
For the brows, brush them neatly in place using a lightweight formula like the Maybelline New York Tattoo Brow 3 Day Styling Brow Gel.
Eyes:
Use a powder blue eyeshadow all over your eyelids for a diffused, blue smokey eye. Go for a pigmented powder like the Shiseido Pop Powdergel Eye Shadow in Zaa Navy. Then define both your lashlines with a thick, jet-black eye pencil like the Benefit Cosmetics Badgal Bang! 24 Hour Eye Pencil, finish off with smoking it out with a brush or even a Q-tip.
Lips:
Finish with a creamy coffee pout; the Simply Nam Comfort Wear Matte Lipstick in Madhu is an excellent pick for this.
3. Rihanna
Always a Met Gala favourite, Riri’s continued to inspire us with a major beauty serve this year as well. While she took the classic route for her base and lips (a glowing, golden complexion with a matte, red lip), the highlight was her tongue-in-cheek sunglasses, with long, exaggerated lashes applied on the outside.
Base:
A healthy complexion is critical to this look— start with a moisturised base and follow up with a strobing cream under your foundation to achieve a radiant base. Layer a buildable, medium to full coverage foundation, we recommend the MUA-fave Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-In-Place Makeup Foundation.
Face:
Swipe a velvety formula like the Anastasia Beverly Hills Cream Bronzer across your cheekbones and temples to add dimension and colour.
Lips:
Next, finish with a precisely-lined classic red lip. Reach for the M.A.C Mini Lipstick in Russian Red to recreate Riri’s Met lip.
4. Alia Bhatt
Alia Bhatt made a winning debut at the Met Gala with her signature rosy, ultra-radiant look paired with a creamy peach lip. The thoughtfully added details elevated the look— cue the shimmery peach highlighter on her inner eye corners.
Base:
For this look, start with a moisturised base and add your favourite hydrating foundation or skin tint. The M.A.C Strobe Cream is great for some dewy luminosity.
Cheeks:
Next, dust a peachy coral blush across the apples of your cheeks and all across your eyelids to add a healthy flush of colour. Take the same shade to your lips for a monotone moment. The Bobbi Brown Crushed Creamy Color - Coral is your multi-purpose hero for this one!
Eyes:
Line your eyes with a soft black liner (don’t forget the lower lash line too!) The trusty Lakmé Absolute Explore Eye Pencil in Mysterious Black will get you there.
Face:
Use a shimmery peach highlighter in the inner corners of your eyes, and across the high points of your face, like your cheekbones and nose. Keep it light-handed with a powdery formula like the INGLOT Sparkling Dust Feb Highlighter.
5. Jennie Kim
Blackpink’s Jennie Kim made her Met Gala debut in vintage 1990s Chanel, with shimmery pearlescent lids and a subtle cat-eye. The highlight of the look was her draped blush, sitting strategically on her temples, and braided half updo.
Base:
To recreate this look, start with a hydrating skin tint; light to medium coverage in a rich formula like the Forest Essentials Som Rasa Silk Skin Tint Foundation should work.
Eyes:
Dust a shimmery, white shadow across your lids with a light hand and draw a thin cat-eye across your upper lash line. You can also hack the eye look by swiping a pearly formula like the Insight Cosmetics Highlighter - Frosted Scale to make it pop further.
Cheeks:
Next, use a bright, bubblegum pink blush and apply in a C-shape on your temples and your cheekbones. To control the shape, use a blush stick, we recommend the L.A. Girl 2 In 1 Velvet Contour And Blush Stick in Dreamy.
Lips:
Finish with a few dabs of a nude tint for your lips. The Bobbi Brown Extra Lip Tint in Bare Nude will last all night and keep your pout hydrated.
