The biggest and most prestigious award in television and OTT – the Emmys, came 4 months late this year, but came in all their glistening glory. The night saw television's biggest stars out and about and their looks, of course, are being dissected and decoded. As expected, the red (or in this case, silver) carpet was peppered with inspiration from a variety of styles – from retro to contemporary and some timeless looks.
Suki Waterhouse’s playful mama-to-be ensemble is one of our highlights – a conversation piece dress in bold red. Joan Collins charmed with her old-school allure (a sequinned gown and hot pink lips); Jeremy Allen White took home an Emmy in a dapper white suit and boyish curls, and Christina Ricci channelled a vintage-chic 1920’s flapper girl.
Our eyes of course, were glued to everyone’s beauty game. Below is a breakdown of some of the looks that we thought were on point – we’re bookmarking these for future glamourous reference.
Padma Lakshmi
Native supermodel, author, producer and host Padma Lakshmi was nominated in the Outstanding Host For A Non-fiction Program category. She stunned in a custom Marchesa Couture gown, her makeup had the loveliest pop of colour, and her hair was worn long, flowy and flawless.
Skin: Her skin was supple and glowing, thanks to makeup artist Bob Scott’s love of skin hydration and prep before application of base makeup. Get the glow by adding an undereye cream like the Olay Ultimate Eye Cream to your skin prep, and follow up with a hydrating base product like Laura Mercier’s Flawless Concealer.
Lips: A shade of pink so nice, she did it twice! Earlier this week at the Creative Arts Emmys, Padma donned a bougainvillea-petal pink lippie – a vibrant pop of colour that worked so well, she decided to wear it again last night. Our pick to get the look? The Fiery Pink shade of Lancome Absolu Rouge Drama liquid lipstick. Add some gloss, and you’ll be pouting pretty too.
Eyes: The palette for her eyes was easy neutrals – nudes, light mauve shades and just a touch of that ubiquitous pink. The tones nicely complemented her lime-green outfit, and the look was finished with liner and mascara. Rom&nd's Rosebud Garden Eye Palette is just the product you need to achieve something similar to Padma’s lids.
Suki Waterhouse
Her dress has everyone on the internet talking – some love and some have mixed feelings about it. But her hair, makeup and glow – those were hands down winners.
Hair: Suki’s signature hair seems to be tousled, effortless waves and she stayed true to form for the event too, adding a little something to the look with wispy bangs. To get her hair, try styling yours with a mousse like the Rene Furterer Style Sculpting Mousse.
Dewy base: She may have that ‘I’m expecting’ skin glow, but her makeup artist made sure her base doubled down on it. We love a skincare-meets-makeup combo, and suggest a foundation like Kiro’s Daily Dewy Serum Foundation, applied to primed skin.
Eyes: A sweep of shimmering gold on the lids, winged black eyeliner and mascara coated lashes were the look. Tira’s picks for it: Physician’s Formula Shimmer Strips Eye Palette and the Maybelline New York Hyper Glossy Liquid Eyeliner.
Riley Keough
Riley was the perfect balance between elegance and understated glamour, in her all-black look that was topped with a chic black ribbon in her hair.
Eyes: A smokey eye that dreams are made of; this cool-toned, grey version is a modern take on the classic style. Use a combination of matte and shimmery grey and black shades, like the ones in OFRA’s Signature Palette – Irresistible Smokey Eyes.
Cheeks and lip: Add subtle dimension to your face with a light contour. Try Makeup Revolution’s Ultra Brightening Contour Kit. Next, add finishing touches with soft, pinkish-nude lips in Lakme’s Forever Matte Liquid Lip Colour in the shade Nude Dream.
Selena Gomez
Selena brought soft-goth glam back with an edgy, burgundy lip. Think vampy with a touch of elegance.
Lips: Go intensely pigmented on the lips with a matte shade, such as Maybelline New York Color Show Intense Lip Crayon, in a chocolate brown shade.
Eyes: Define the eyes with a bold eyeliner pen, and a few coats of your favourite volumizing mascara for some real drama. We love the Huda Beauty 1 Coat Wow Extra Volumising and Lifting Mascara – one coat and you’re good to go.
Issa Rae
Issa Rae, who was nominated as a screenwriter, came out rocking a sun-kissed, radiant glow. She wore one of the season’s buzziest trends, chocolate lips and paired it with flirty, fluttery lashes.
Cheeks and lip: A bronzer and blush combination are the way to go here, and our picks are the Too Faced Chocolate Soleil Bronzer, which you can sculpt your face with as well as use to bring a nice warmth. Pair it with a richly pigmented and lasting blush, like Plum’s Cheek-A-Boo Shimmer Blush. Blend and layer the blush and bronzer for a snatched look.
Eyes: Play up your eyes next, with dreamy, fluttery lashes. We love a good pair of falsies for those times when you want to up the ante. Try Pinky Goat’s Julia Half Lash Faux Mink False Lashes, that will add fullness to your eyes and give them an instant lift. Finish with a coat of L’Oreal Paris Lash Paradise Mascara.
