Let’s be honest, lip liners do not get the credit they deserve. They’re often overshadowed by their better halves – lipsticks – ’cause ain’t nobody got the time for an added step to their routine. In the grand scheme of things, however, a lip liner set can prove to be quite the gamechanger. Think of a lip liner as the trusty sidekick that has always got your lipstick’s back.
Using your lip liner correctly makes a world of a difference to the shape of your pout and the longevity of your lip colour, especially if you have a hard time perfecting the outline of your lips with a traditional bullet. Here’s how to use lip liners, because it’s time to give this lip makeup product all the clout it deserves.
Step 1 – Prime your pout
When it comes to anything makeup, preparing the base is key. Your lips are the first to get chapped, dry, and flaky, so it’s imperative to apply some lip balm before you start working on them. Feel your lips need a little bit of scrub? Try exfoliating them with a little bit of sugar and honey before prepping them. A lip mask at night also helps give your lips an extra dose of hydration –– especially if they feel parched and dehydrated.
Step 2 - Trace it out with lip liner
Time to go to town with your lip liner. Use a lip liner pencil or a fine lip liner brush to trace your desired shape–– especially the areas you’d like to define. Have fun with this step –– you can always wipe off what you don’t like and start over.
Step 3 - It’s all in the shape
Assess the shape of your lips and understand what you want to accentuate or correct before going in with your lip liner. Use your lip liner to tweak the outline and achieve your desired shape for the look. If you’ve got a fuller bottom lip, you might want to even it out by making your upper lip bigger too. If you want to create those amplified Kar-Jenner lips, overlining your top lip is the thing to do.
Step 4 – Into the shadows
Adding shadows allows you to fake fuller lips while keeping things natural. Take a darker lip liner shade and contour the centre of your bottom lip to give it some depth. Fill the corners of your lips with the same shade to define the edges.
Step 5 – Bring out the big guns
Your lipstick comes into play once you’re done with the outline. Make sure your lipstick is as close as possible in colour as your lip liner. Apply it on and then use your ring finger or a lip brush to smoothen the pigment into your lips and blend it with the liner.
Step 6 – Finishing touches
Use clean fingers or a cotton bud to remove excess product from around your lips. If it gets too messy, clean the edges with a wet wipe or earbuds dipped in micellar water. Add a little concealer around your lips and blend with a brush. This not only tackles any spills and feathering but also leaves your lips looking professionally done.
