While Pantone might have zeroed in on viva magenta for its color of the year 2023, the rest of the world seems to have lost their hearts to its ‘cooler’ sibling – a vibrant Barbiecore pink. Understandably so, as Greta Gerwig’s much-awaited feature film slated to release later in July has truly made this the summer of everything Barbie.
Stepping into Barbie’s world, we see the inspiration for this tone rooted in the iconic doll that has been part of most of our childhoods. Be it in fashion or in beauty trends, we’re witnessing renditions of Barbiecore taking over our social media feeds and rapidly becoming 2023’s hottest trend.
Think pink
Barbiecore trend encompasses various shades of pink—from neon pops to bubblegum to fuschia to watermelon – combined with a hyperfeminine aesthetic to fulfil almost every 90s child’s playtime dream. But, the trend isn’t a revolutionary one. Since 1959, Barbie has played muse for various designers, artists, and trends across fashion and beauty. The aesthetic came back in the 2000s when we saw celebrities like Paris Hilton and Nicki Minaj popularise the pink-on-pink trend. Now, with the showcase of Valentino’s Fall 2022 runway collection, the release of 2023’s Barbie movie, and the resurgence of all things Y2K, it’s not surprising that Barbiecore is making a comeback.
For the love of makeup
Barbiecore is a refreshing, clean and vibrant break from the everyday blacks, browns, and nudes. It’s playful, creative and gives you the freedom to experiment—the louder, the better when it comes to embodying this aesthetic. Whether you’re down to dial it up the Barbie way, or prefer a more subtle iteration, here’s a little inspiration to embrace this trend:
#1 – Drape on the pink
If you want to start small with the Barbiecore makeup trend, opt for a rose gold eyeshadow paired with a rosy pink blush swooped on your cheekbones and extended all the way up to your temples, and tie in the look with a nude pink satin lip.

#2 – Pink on pink on pink
Experiment with different shades of Barbiecore pink in one look – loud on the eyes and cheeks and subtle on the lips. Just make sure to blend in the blush for a seamless look. Feeling bold? Go graphic with shapes and lines when it comes to your eyeliner. Don’t forget the pink nails to truly give in to the aesthetic.

#3 – Mellow and monochrome
Giving a subtle nod to the Barbiecore makeup trend, this look is perfect for a brunch date. A monochromatic pink shimmer on the eyes, a touch of blush on the cheeks along with a baby pink lip – you’ll be wearing this trend like a pro.

#4 – Pop of pink
The Barbiecore makeup trend doesn’t necessarily entail going pink with all your makeup products. Why not keep the rest of your look as you would usually and incorporate one element of pink? In this case, you can wear a pink eyeliner or mascara to add that pop of colour to your look.

#5 - Glossy lids
Have fun with this trend by glossing things up. A hot pink mono eyeshadow topped with gloss will add more drama to an already dramatic and eye-catching look.
