For the longest time, plastic surgery was the subject of tabloid fodder. However, in recent years, the hush-hush tones have been replaced with open and honest discussions and portrayals of plastic surgery pros and cons and what they can realistically achieve. One of the biggest proponents of change is the voice of Dr Lara Devgan, a board-certified plastic surgeon who has been wielding the influence of almost one million followers on Instagram to shatter the stigma around plastic surgery.
“In the past, there was a greater emphasis on secrecy surrounding cosmetic procedures as there was often a negative connotation associated with altering one's appearance,” concedes Dr Devgan. However, in recent years, she has observed a shift in societal attitudes towards plastic surgery. “Society at large is now more comfortable discussing aesthetic goals and exploring the wide variety of cosmetic options available. It's important to continue fostering open conversations, spreading accurate information and promoting the understanding that plastic surgery is not a taboo subject,” she adds. By destigmatising plastic surgery, she believes that individuals can be encouraged to make well-informed decisions that make them feel empowered in their choices.
A positive shift in the conversation
Among the key drivers is the increased access to information and the rise of social media platforms which have created a space for individuals to share their experiences, showcase their transformations and engage in open conversations about plastic surgery. This transparency has worked on dispelling myths and demystifying the field, thereby allowing the public to gain a better understanding of the realities and benefits of plastic surgery. “Celebrities, influencers and other public figures openly discussing their experiences with plastic surgery have also contributed to a change in perception. By sharing their stories, they have helped normalise the concept of cosmetic enhancements and showcased the transformative impact plastic surgery can have on one's self-esteem and overall well-being,” she shares.
Misconceptions about plastic surgery Dr Lara Devgan doesn’t want you to believe
Among the major misconceptions plaguing the world of plastic surgery is that it is a shallow field solely driven by vanity. Dr Devgan is quick to denounce the notion, adding that aesthetic enhancements might be a significant part of what they do but that plastic surgery encompasses a wide range of procedures that go beyond mere vanity. “When I was coming up in this field, the aesthetic of plastic surgery was very ‘more is more’, resulting in unnaturally large breasts and puffy faces. Modern plastic surgery can—and should—be the opposite. As a plastic surgeon, my goal is to enhance a person's unique features while maintaining their natural beauty and identity to avoid that ‘overdone’ look with a combination of surgical as well as nonsurgical procedures. This holistic approach allows me to address all of the different aspects of a patient's concerns, ensuring a harmonious and comprehensive transformation.”
Dr Devgan is also hoping to change the notion that plastic surgery is a quick fix or an easy solution. “It is important to remember that plastic surgery is not a magic wand or a shortcut to instant perfection. It is a transformative process that involves both physical and emotional aspects—the psychological adjustment is often just as important as the physical healing process. It is a partnership between the patient and the surgeon, requiring realistic expectations, active participation and dedication to the recovery process,” she informs.
Important questions to ask yourself before opting for plastic surgery
For those who are considering opting for surgery, Dr Devgan believes certain important questions can ensure that an informed and well-considered decision is being made:
* What are my motivations?
It is essential to understand why you are considering surgery. Are you seeking to address a specific concern, improve your self-confidence or enhance your overall appearance? Evaluating your motivations can help you determine if surgery is the appropriate solution for your goals.
* Have I explored non-surgical options?
Depending on your specific needs, there may be non-surgical alternatives that can achieve similar results. It's important to research and consider all available options before deciding on surgery.
* Am I well-informed about the procedure and my surgeon?
Take the time to educate yourself about the surgical procedure you are considering. Understand the risks, benefits, expected outcomes and recovery process. Consult with a trusted and qualified board-certified plastic surgeon who can provide you with detailed information and answer any questions you may have.
* What are my expectations?
It is crucial to have realistic expectations about the outcome of the surgery. Plastic surgery can enhance your appearance, but it cannot completely change your physical form or solve underlying emotional issues. Ensure that your expectations align with what is realistically achievable through the chosen procedure.
* Am I in good overall health?
Assess your overall health and disclose any pre-existing medical conditions or medications to your surgeon. Being in good health is essential for a safe and successful surgery. Your surgeon will evaluate your medical history and determine if you are a suitable candidate for the procedure.
* Have I considered the potential risks and complications?
Like any surgical procedure, it is essential to take the time to understand and discuss the risks with your surgeon. Knowing the potential challenges allows you to make an informed decision and weigh the benefits against the risks.
* Do I have a support system in place?
Surgery and the recovery process can be physically and emotionally demanding. It is important to have a support system of family or friends who can assist you during the recovery period and provide emotional support.
* Can I commit to the recovery process?
Understand the expected recovery timeline and any post-operative instructions provided by your surgeon. Ensure that you can commit to the necessary downtime, follow-up appointments and post-operative care required for a successful recovery.
“By asking yourself these questions and honestly assessing your motivations, expectations and readiness, you can make an informed decision about whether or not to proceed with surgery. Open communication with your plastic surgeon throughout this process is essential, as they can provide guidance, address concerns, and help you navigate the decision-making process effectively,” she concludes.
