Coming off the high of fashion's biggest event, we were sure that another international event would struggle to match up to the Met Gala’s extravagance. But, as cinema’s most prominent red carpet rolled out, we stood corrected. Celebrating the best of TV and cinema over a span of twelve days, the Cannes Film Festival is a hard-to-miss event. Even more so when it comes to the impact it has on fashion and beauty. With attendees ranging from blockbuster celebrities to indie darlings, everybody at Cannes shows up looking their best. And, equipped with the best stylists, makeup artists, and hair stylists as part of their entourage, you can be sure to spot some incredible celebrity looks on the carpet. So much so that they serve as a primer for beauty looks that promise to be on display for the rest of the awards season. Below are five of our favourite beauty trends from the festival.
1. Wet hair, don’t care
The wet hair look relies on lots of mousse, hair gel and setting spray to create the illusion of just stepping out of the shower (or a cinematic rain sequence) and onto the carpet. It’s sexy and bold, and when sported by V from BTS, Soo Joo Park, Simona Tabasco, and Laura Harrier, it’s reached ‘baddie’ status in the span of a week. If raked back strands are a stretch too far, a wet-look slick bun à la Anushka Sharma is the perfect way to get started.
2. Statement bangs this way
It seems like red carpets in 2023 belong to bangs. Baby, long, feathered, or fringed — statement bangs really brought on the heat. Fashion girls like Dua Lipa, Gemma Chan, and half of Blackpink – Rosé and Jennie – showed up to their photo calls all bang-ed up, and left us all spellbound.
3. Crimson lips
Crimson lips have been a silver screen favourite for ages. From Marylin Monroe to Deepika Padukone back home, this bold lip has had a long history with cinema. Scarlett Johansson, Iris Law, Anja Rubik, and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan embraced the striking red lip on the carpet and we cannot complain.
4. Monochrome looks
What did Gigi Hadid, Esha Gupta, Diana Penty, and almost half of the attendees have in common last week? They all chose to go monochrome for their appearances in the French Riviera. From Gigi’s mocha-tinted glam to Diana dipping in nude hues, monochrome may have just upstaged the red carpet this time around.
5. Tousled textures
Natural textures paired with décolletage-bearing button-downs, the men brought the house down with this smouldering hair trend. Teased and shaped to perfection, you’re bound to see natural textures take centre stage more often come awards season. The cast of Strange Way Of Life is enough to convince you to ditch the straightener or relaxer and embrace full-bodied hair for a change.
