Originating in the 1970s in France (surprise, surprise), the French manicure is a style of nail art that has never gone out of fashion. Its classic form is a natural nude or pale pink base colour with a white or off-white tip painted in a crescent, or half-moon, shape to follow the natural curve of the nail. However, given the simplicity of the style, nail enthusiasts have dialed it up with several variations in recent years. From graphic designs to bold nail colours, here are all the ways to wear French manicure nails in 2023.
1. The Neon French Manicure
If you're looking to add some excitement to your basic French nails, try giving them a neon twist. This trend involves swapping the traditional white tip with a vibrant neon, maybe an electric blue or a neon green. An instant win for the summer, if you ask us.
2. The Double French Manicure
French tip nails can be given some more dimension, and the double French manicure does that and more. This trend involves painting two lines separated by a narrow gap onto the nail, creating a double-tip effect. You can further amp this up with two different colours, or different shades of the same colour.
3. The invisible French manicure
The invisible French manicure is a subtler variation (if that’s even possible) of the traditional French nail polish style. It uses a sheer or nude polish, distinct from the base colour, instead of a classic solid white tip. This look is natural yet modern, and understated yet elevated, as if the nails have been naturally shaped and polished.
4. Lip Liner French
Think ultra-slim, micro-tip French nail designs and you'll have the ‘lip liner French’ trend. Popularised as chrome tips, the look has evolved to include pastels and jewel tones, proving its versatility. Modest and refined, it's the perfect nail art for people who like to wear their nails naked but don't want to miss their regular trips to the nail bar.
5. Reverse French
The reverse French manicure, also known as the half-moon manicure, is a style of French nail art where the nail polish's colours are inverted and placed close to the cuticles. The half-moon shape is painted at the base of the nail and is usually left natural or painted white, while the rest of the nail is painted with a different colour.
6. Vanilla french
Closest to the classic French nail art style, the vanilla French manicure begins with painting the tips of the nails with a soft, creamy vanilla shade. The rest of the nail is left natural or painted with a sheer, nude polish. Less stark-looking yet statement, the style has been popularised by celebrity brides opting for the subtle look in order to make their ensembles shine.
7. Monochrome French
Monochrome fashion will always stay in style, and this next trend proves just that. French nail tip designs are usually painted in stark contrast to the rest of the nail. However, the monochrome style calls for painting the tip in the same colour, either two tones lighter or darker. The hues can also be differentiated as long that they maintain the illusion of being from the same colour family.
8. Graphic French tip
French nail tip designs can be elevated with a graphic shape or two. Either on an accent finger or all of them, add graphic shapes to the French tips to make them pop a lot more. It’s safe to say that you might need a professional’s touch to get this done, but DIY designs can also be achieved with nail stickers and stamps.
