Your foundation, as you can tell from its name, is the base for all your makeup artistry. It’s also the trickiest to buy. The right shade, formulation, coverage - there are a lot of boxes to tick before you find your perfect match. If you’re just starting on your makeup journey, liquid foundations should be your first port of call. Most liquid formulas are easy to apply, offer buildable coverage with room for trial and error, and create a veil on your skin, leaving you glowing with a no-makeup-makeup look.
“I personally love them as compared to stick foundations, cream-based or mousse formulas. When the idea is to get a smooth finish, nothing can give you the blending benefits like that of a liquid formula,” shares celebrity makeup artist Bianca Louzado.
Your checklist for the best liquid foundation
It’s natural to have high expectations from a makeup product that’s so essential to your routine, but liquid foundations deliver and how!
* High coverage:
They can provide sheer, medium or full coverage based on the formulation you choose.
* Buildable:
Beginners needn’t fret – liquid foundations can be layered without looking cakey.
* Long-lasting:
Need your makeup to stay intact through the day? A liquid base is the way to go. They last way longer than powdery or creamy formulas.
* Blends easily:
Since they are either silicone- or water-based, liquid foundations blend like a dream and give the skin a dewy, matte finish.
* Even skin tone:
The coverage offered makes it easy to correct the skin tone and cover up scars or blemishes while still allowing you to look natural.
* Suitable for all skin types:
It’s a misconception that you can’t use liquid foundation for oily skin. However, make sure you use a setting powder in your grease-prone zones right after. As for liquid foundations for dry skin, they’re a match made in makeup heaven.
How to apply liquid foundation
Learning to use a liquid foundation is as essential as getting the right shade and formula. If you apply too much, you may end up with cake on your face and, with too little, it could end up being quite sheer.
Step 1:
Pump the foundation on the back of your hand, using it as a palette. Start with one pump and keep building as you go.
Step 2:
Pat small amounts of the foundation onto your forehead, cheeks, chin and nose. Don't miss the neck.
Step 3:
Take a makeup sponge and spray some water onto it. You can do the same with a foundation brush.
Step 4:
Dab the damp sponge on your face and blend the product evenly into your skin.
Step 5:
If you need more coverage, go in with another pump and repeat the process.
Step 6:
Wait a couple of minutes for everything to set and your foundation is done!
