What are eyelash extensions?
Eyelash extensions are semi-permanent and super-fine synthetic lash strands, usually made from faux mink, mink, silk fibre or a lightweight synthetic fibre. They come in various lengths, curls and tints to give clients room for personalisation. They are attached to your natural eyelashes using a strong eyelash extension glue, strategically placed to enhance your natural eye shape. Once you get lash extensions, you can easily skip mascara or falsies for a few weeks.
Eyelash artists and technicians primarily use three different types of eyelashes – mink, silk or synthetic. Mink and silk are the best options for anyone looking for natural eye extensions. Many studios also offer faux mink extensions that mimic the look and feel of mink but are more cost-effective. Synthetic lashes are thicker and fuller, making them an ideal pick if you want a bolder, more dramatic look. Every lash studio has different options to offer, so make sure you’re consulting with your aesthetician beforehand to understand which fibre best suits your needs. In case you are allergic to cats or any animal fur, be sure to inform the technician well in advance.
Irrespective of the type of eyelash extension, they all come in a variety of lengths and curls. The client can select the size and curl as per their preference. A mix of different lash lengths can also be used to create a wide-eyed effect and deliver a more natural look.
What are the benefits of eyelash extensions?
Eyelash extensions are great for anyone looking to enhance the length, volume, and overall appearance of their lashes. Since this is a semi-permanent procedure, it lasts for four to six weeks if it is well cared for. As these extensions are completely waterproof, you can shower or even go for a swim as you usually do. A big plus is that the procedure is completely painless and safe.
However, it is important to note that some may experience irritation or allergic reactions from the glue. Therefore, it is important to work with a professional and do a patch test before proceeding. The treatment is also expensive and can set you back by anything between Rs 5000 to Rs 15000, depending on the type of lashes, length, curl and density. The procedure also requires maintenance— refills are advised every two to four weeks, and can cost around Rs.2000 to Rs.5000.
How are eyelash extensions done?
If you are wondering how to apply eyelash extensions by yourself, the answer is simple – you cannot. Lash extensions can only be applied by a trained lash artist and the procedure, which is precise and laborious, can take up to 2 hours.
The eyelash extension process:
Step 1: Evaluation
The technician will, and should, first take you through all the risks and benefits associated with the procedure. They will also inquire about any eye problems or health conditions you may have that can potentially be affected by extensions.
Step 2: Selection
Once you decide to go ahead with the process, it is time to select the lashes. The artist will present you with various lengths, curls and types of lash extensions offered and help you choose the ones most suited to your aesthetic and price point.
Step 3: Cleansing
The artist will make you lie down and will clean your eyes, removing every speck of makeup, oils and debris in and around them to prepare them for the process.
Step 4: Prepping
An under-eye gel will be applied to the lower lash line to keep the lower lashes out of the way. This white gel also works as a crisp background for the artist to precisely see their work as they apply the lashes. The gel is secured in place using medical tapes. It does not overlap with the lower lashes and hence is not painful to remove.
Step 5: Application
The artist uses a tweezer to hold individual lashes and dip them in the glue. This eyelash extension glue is non-irritant and does not damage your natural lashes. Then, the lashes are carefully applied one-at-a-time to your lash line. Although the procedure is completely painless, you may be anxious about a tweezer being so close to your eye, which is why it is important to only trust trained professionals with this task.
Step 6: Drying
The lash glue dries very quickly but the artist may ask you to sit with your eyes closed for about 10 minutes after the last lash is applied to ensure that the glue is completely dry.
Step 6: Cleaning up
The under-eye gel is removed and, as a final touch, the lashes are brushed using a spoolie. Once this is done, you can open your eyes and admire your new eyelashes.
Step 7: After-care and maintenance
Eyelash extensions must be maintained well so they last as long as possible. Here are a few after-care things to do to make sure the lash extensions last longer:
- Do not wet the lashes for at least 48 hours after the procedure is done. Avoid contact with steam as well.
- Avoid standing under the shower for too long. The water droplets hitting the lashes can weigh them down and cause premature breakage, not only of the extensions but also of your natural lashes.
- Do not use oil-based cleansers near the extensions. This includes makeup removers, facial oils, serums, etc. The oil can cause the glue to dissolve over time.
- Practice sleeping on your back. if you tend to sleep on your side or face-down on your pillow, it will create pressure on the lashes.
- Remember not to rub your eyes too hard when you are wearing these extensions. It can rip off the natural eyelash along with the extensions.
- Never use a mechanical eyelash curler while wearing the extensions as it will rip them off.
If you’re a fan of lash extensions and get them regularly, remember to take breaks in between to give your natural lashes a rest. Get rid of the extensions occasionally and nourish the natural lashes with castor oil, almond oil or a good massage to stimulate growth and make them regain strength.
