Spent an hour perfecting that wing, concealing a zit or getting those brows to look even? Well, chances are the sweltering heat will anyway melt away your makeup. The rising temperatures and increasing humidity levels act as a double-edged sword against your careful application.
While none of us quite possesses Thor’s weather-controlling powers, there are a couple of ways in which you can prevent your makeup from melting away with the heat. Celebrity makeup artist Lekha Gupta breaks down a few ways to sweat-proof your makeup this summer—and make sure the glow you seek isn’t just some good old perspiration.
1. Prep is key
Every makeup artist swears by this one rule: prepping your skin with the right skincare products to sweat-proof makeup. However, the right picks for you to prep your skin will depend entirely on your skin type.
If you have dry skin:
“Use products which are hydrating in nature and will add back moisture to your skin,” Gupta tells us. If your skin feels excessively dry in the summer heat, add a serum to your skincare routine for targeted hydration. Serums are formulated with active ingredients to combat dryness. Once you’ve treated your skin to some hydration, lock it in with a moisturiser. Tira’s go-to summer beauty tip for dry skin would be to invest in something infused with hyaluronic acid for plump, hydrated skin.
If you have oily skin:
Gupta puts her trust in sebum control to sweat-proof all summer makeup looks. “Use mattifying products which are oil-free and non-comedogenic, which means they won’t clog your pores,” she recommends. Prep with oil-control primers to ensure the open pores don’t secrete further sebum that makes the skin look oily. She also suggests incorporating exfoliation as part of your skincare at least once in three days. “Avoid oils and stick to more mattifying and powdered forms,” she adds.
If you have an oily t-zone:
“When you have combination skin, it’s like dealing with two extreme kinds of weather at the same time. Some parts are oily and some are dry,” Gupta says. “Understanding the different needs of the different skin zones is key.” She recommends using a pore cleansing mask and an exfoliating mask to your skin prep routine. Focus their application on the oily t-zone so the excess oil is drilled out. Once that’s done, use a moderately mild moisturiser to maintain overall hydration.
2. Less is more
When temperatures are soaring, you want to keep things light and breezy. Gupta advises using minimal makeup so that your skin is not over-layered. “Definitely use a primer as it forms a barrier between your skin and external impurities. ‘Less is more’ should be the mantra, so use very little of either hydrating or mattifying concealers and foundation, depending upon your skin type,” she says. “Use a translucent powder to set the products well and, wherever possible, use waterproof makeup products.” According to Gupta, to make your makeup truly sweat-proof and prevent bleeding, one must spritz on a makeup fixer.
Using the right kind of powders to blot away sweat and excess oil is essential. However, you don’t have to apply it to your entire face. Simply dust the powder to the areas of your face that are prone to perspiration, such as your forehead, nose or chin. This creates a soft-focus effect on your skin, sets the foundation in places that collect perspiration and prevents creasing.
3. Keep your makeup handy
The heat and humidity imply that your makeup won’t make it past a few hours. Therefore, it’s important to keep your touch-up tools handy. “Always carry blotting paper to keep relieving your face from excess sebum secretion throughout the day,” Gupta says. According to her, a compact powder or matte translucent powder that cuts shine will be your BFF for those quick fixes.
Translucent powder is also great for when you want to stop your lipstick from bleeding. All you have to do is apply your lipstick, blot it down with a tissue, dust on some translucent powder and then reapply the lipstick. This will prevent the colour from spilling or smudging, especially when it’s boiling hot outside.
